This research project is a design case study that observes how an informal remote connection between friends or social acquaintances can impact social connectedness in remote workers. It addresses the effect/value of this connection on factors like motivation and mood, and focuses on the role of physical artifacts in this using the 'TwoYou' device. The study explores remote contact and interactive exchanges of information as a part of remote presence, creating an active remote connection between people working from home.
The value of remote presence and regular contact during the work day was evaluated in a three-day field deployment with a duo of friends working from home. The button on the device was used by these participants to request contact (e.g. text or phone call). The second test consisted of a storyboard-based interview with a different duo where alternative ways to use the button (e.g. sharing accomplishments/expressing frustrations) were discussed.
