Nocturnal Neighbours
In our rapidly urbanizing world, creating environments that welcome both humans and nocturnal animals is increasingly important. The Nocturnal Neighbours project explores how smart home technology can help us coexist with nocturnal wildlife, specifically focusing on bats in De Blaak, Tilburg.
Set in the year 2039, this project envisions a future where humans and bats live side by side. It addresses key issues like habitat loss and disturbances caused by human activity. By adopting a more-than-human approach, we've designed three interconnected products to support this coexistence:
- Bat Wall: Provides safe accommodation for bats within urban areas.
- Indicator: Monitors and signals the presence of bats to reduce disturbances.
- Community Overview: Helps residents understand and manage their local nocturnal ecosystem.
Through an iterative design process and expert interviews, we've considered both ethical and practical aspects. Our goal is to foster a symbiotic relationship where data sharing within smart home environments enables peaceful coexistence between all urban inhabitants.
